Formula 1 is the ultimate goal for many drivers in karting. When they lace up their boots, pull on their suits, and lower the visor, everything they do in those early karting days is driven by the hope of one day reaching the top level of motorsport.

For British drivers racing on British circuits, that dream can feel especially close. Formula 1 began in Britain, and today 6 of the current 22 F1 drivers started their careers in British karting.

There is no doubt that British karting has a huge influence on the sport. It can springboard careers, develop racecraft, and offer that first glimpse of who truly has the talent to go far. Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton is still connected to those roots. He first used the number 44 during his karting days. George Russell, Alex Albon, Oliver Bearman, Lando Norris, and Arvid Lindblad also all have strong links to British karting.

Now, the dawn of a new era begins, and that change is arriving in the form of The Champions of the Future Academy Program.

Introducing OK-N to Britain
British karting is about to get a lot faster, with machinery not commonly used in the UK being introduced. OK-N racing is a package known for its ability to teach drivers control and how to manage speed, largely because it requires engines to be kept at high revs. It also introduces push starts using a decompression valve, adding another layer of skill that undoubtedly teaches drivers a great deal.

Currently, Italy dominates much of the OK-N market, but Britain remains one of the most competitive environments in the sport. In fact, 50 percent of the FIA Karting World Championship podium finishers over the past two years have been British.

New beginning, same goals.
Seventy-six years ago, in 1950, Formula 1 hosted its first ever Grand Prix in England at the Silverstone Circuit. In recent years, there has been a growing buzz, driven by the development of the Silverstone Kart Circuit, a project that has captured attention across the sport.

The Champions of the Future Academy Program will host the first ever race at the new circuit, marking a significant moment. It will showcase emerging talent and continue to develop drivers through its arrive and drive format, built on equal machinery for all competitors.

In Formula 1, the first winner at Silverstone was Giuseppe “Nino” Farina. Now, from 27 to 29 March, the Champions of the Future Academy Program UK Series will crown its own first winner at Silverstone, ushering in a new era.

A name that says it all
There has been one name at the front of international karting for several years, setting the standard while using the same brands that will feature in the Junior and Senior categories of the UK Academy, IAME and Kart Republic. That name is Joe Turney.

A double Vice World Champion and a key figure in the development of Kart Republic machinery in recent years, Joe began his career in British karting. That makes him the ideal person to highlight what can be expected from this new chapter.

In Joe Turney’s  words, “British karting is among the most competitive environments in the world, particularly at national level where grid sizes, such as those in the Motorsport UK Karting Championship, are large and the overall standard is extremely high. Margins are fine, and so are consistency, racecraft and handling pressure. The weather also makes racing in the UK complex. Drivers must adapt quickly and be precise in changing conditions.”

“The Champions of the Future Academy UK Series will place the focus entirely on the driver. In that environment, racecraft and adaptability are revealed very quickly. It is a great way of identifying drivers who can truly develop, rather than rely on machinery, which is essential if you want to rise through the ranks of karting and motorsport.”

“For me, I know the KR and IAME package has already proven itself internationally, and there is no reason to expect anything less in the UK. I have raced with this package in multiple countries and environments for over three years, and I can say it is more than capable of handling the demands of UK circuits. It offers a strong balance of performance and drivability, which is exactly what is needed on the technical British tracks and in the variable conditions.”

A new challenge now takes centre stage at Silverstone. The Champions of the Future Academy Program continues to grow, seeking out new talent and feeding it into the ever-demanding world of motorsport, where the next generation is waiting.
